Save the Children is the leading independent organization inspiring breakthroughs in the way the world treats children, achieving immediate and lasting change in their lives. It served over 85 million children in the United States and in 60 countries around the world in 2011; it also contributes to the work of the global Save the Children movement working in 120 countries.
Carolyn Miles joined the organization in 1998, and after various leadership positions, spent seven years as COO. During her tenure as COO, Save the Children doubled the number of children it reached with nutrition, health, educational, and other programs, and helped grow the organization’s budget from $250 million to more than $550 million. Almost 90 percent of this budget goes directly to programs serving children. She became the CEO and President in 2011 and since then the organization has grown in annual resources of over $620 million.
Earlier in her career, she worked in Hong Kong and New York for American Express as an entrepreneur. While living in Asia, she confronted massive deprivation of the region’s children and committed herself to their welfare. She is active on numerous boards, including US Global Leadership Council, InterAction and the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, where she received her M.B.A. She has also served on the Board of Blackbaud, the leading supplier of non-profit software to the sector.
Miles is a frequent speaker at events on topics such as corporate/NGO partnerships, development trends, and child health and education, and has appeared widely in traditional and on-line media.
Carolyn Miles was a Counsellor at One Young World Summits: 2012 in Pittsburgh.
