Business Fights Poverty Climate Justice Summit 2022

From 9 to 10 November, Business Fights Poverty will hold this Hybrid Summit in Egypt and online. Climate change is affecting us all, but the most severe impacts are being felt by the most vulnerable people, who contribute least to the causes of the problem.

How can business ensure people are at the centre of climate action?

This Summit will bring together voices and insights from across the globe, from business, NGOs, academia and government. They will share the latest thinking on the role of business in ensuring climate justice. The Summit will deepen connections and help build new relationships to drive forward collaborative action.

About the Summit

Businesses increasingly recognise the urgency of tackling and adapting to climate change. More and more companies are joining the Race to Zero, the Science Based Targets Initiative, and other efforts to lower their emissions. Yet, there is a danger that the focus on Net Zero, as important as that is, will mean we fail to recognise that climate change is fundamentally about people.

Climate change is affecting us all, but the most severe impacts are being felt by the most vulnerable people. A recent UN climate change report made clear that 40% of the world’s population is currently “highly vulnerable” to climate change impacts - and most of them live in places least responsible for causing climate change.

Existing inequities - due to factors such as gender, race and income - exacerbate the risks to people’s lives and livelihoods. Inequity also shapes people’s capacity and opportunity to participate in the transition to a green economy. Climate change and inequity are two of the biggest challenges of our time; progress on either means we need to recognise that both are inextricably connected.

How to participate

Broadcasting live from Sharm El-Sheikh, Business Fights Poverty Climate Justice 2022 will be a genuinely hybrid, inclusive and interactive event, giving you a chance to be an active part of the conversation even if you can’t be at COP27. Join us online, or apply to join one of our intimate in-person workshop spaces in Sharm El-Sheikh, Cairo or London.

The Summit will bring together people around the world who are passionate about climate justice, from across business, civil society and government. Together we’ll explore critical questions on leadership, partnership, youth empowerment and gender equity. Building on conversations we convened during last year’s COP26 and since, we’ll identify new actions we can take together.
