Guillermo Herrera-Arcos

Delegate Speaker for the Health Plenary Challenge

Guillermo Herrera-Arcos is a Mexican technologist driven by how global health problems can be radically transformed with hard science and technology. He holds a robotics engineering bachelor's degree from Tecnologico de Monterrey and a master of science in neural engineering from MIT. As a young researcher, Guillermo helped develop a robotic exoskeleton to assist paraplegic people in walking, which is currently undergoing clinical trials. He also led an award-winning neuroscience study on brain activity during aesthetic experiences. As a cofounder of Prothesia, he is working on a digital platform to design and manufacture tailored medical devices much faster, more cheaply and with fewer errors than traditional techniques. It has already helped dozens of children in low-resource settings. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the platform was used to fabricate diagnostic tools. As a PhD student at MIT he is working on novel neural interfaces that enable the control of paralysed muscles
