Sir Lewis Hamilton
Formula One World Champion, The Hamilton Commision
Sir Lewis Hamilton is a Seven-Time Formula One World Champion and with 96 race wins, is considered the most successful driver of all time. Throughout Hamilton’s journey to the top, he has walked a lonely path as the only Black F1 driver. Coming from a working-class family in the UK, he succeeded in a sport where the odds were stacked against him but where his talent shone through. He embraced what made him different and his rise to the top of his career has made him fiercely committed to using his platform to influence positive change for future generations.
In partnership with Togetherband, Hamilton is an Ambassador for the UN’s Global Goal 4: Quality Education. Having overcome his own struggles at school before finding success, Hamilton is passionate about inspiring the next generation to harness their talents and believes educational equality is fundamental to making this happen.
Hamilton is particularly outspoken in his call for racial justice and utilising education as a tool for a more equal society. He uses his platform and influence to call for greater diversity and inclusion in his own sport and in 2020 launched The Hamilton Commission, a research project in partnership with the Royal Academy of Engineering, dedicated to identifying the barriers young Black people face in entering the UK motorsport industry.
This year The Commission offered actionable recommendations to overcome these barriers, and Hamilton launched a joint foundation with his team, Mercedes, dedicated to improving access to motorsport amongst underrepresented minorities.
