Khin Sandar Tun believes in the power of constructive dialogue to promote positive peace in Myanmar. She wanted local youth to be represented in peace talks between the government and armed groups, so she founded a group called Youth Participation in Peace Process. After a two year long battle she succeeded and was able to have two observers attend the ceasefire negotiations in 2014. However, a new government gained power following the 2015 election and they have not yet allowed Khin Sandar’s organisation to have representation at the peace talks. Despite this, Youth Participation in Peace Process continues to host training and advocacy sessions and panel discussions to promote peace. Following a swell in ethnic tensions in May 2016, Khin Sandar and her fellow political science students initiated a peace march in Yangon, attracting 2,000 protesters and visiting buildings of religious significance to both Muslim and Buddhist communities. The march gained a lot of media attention and the police unsuccessfully tried to shut it down.
