First counter-extremism guide for young people by young people launches

Young leaders in the global fight against violent extremism today met with former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and senior figures at the European Commission to launch the first counter-extremism guide for young people by young people.

The guide is produced by Extremely Together, an initiative managed by the Kofi Annan Foundation with the support of the One Young World and the European Commission. The initiative brought together 10 exceptional leaders with proven track-records in preventing and countering violent extremism in their communities. For the past year they have pooled ideas, shared experiences and produced this guide to enable their peers and thousands of young people around the world, to turn the tide against extremism of all forms.

With more than half the world’s population under 30, violent extremism counts a disproportionate number of young people amongst its victims or perpetrators. The Extremely Together guide was created in the belief that this generation is uniquely placed to counter extremism and provides practical advice for young people to do so as role models, teachers, family members, friends or mentors.

Speaking on the aims of the guide, Extremely Together Young Leader Hajer Sharief from Libya said: “We want nothing short of starting a movement of young people worldwide mobilising against violent extremism. This guide is just the beginning. It will direct our work in the future and hopefully convince many other young people to follow in our footsteps.”
