Peter Ogik
Co-founder and Executive Director of the Source of the Nile Union of Persons with Albinism
Mr. Peter Ogik is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Source of the Nile Union of Persons with Albinism (SNUPA) a non-governmental organisation in Uganda, led by persons with albinism. Mr Ogik’s passion for disability rights advocacy originates in his own childhood. He was the first person with albinism to be born into his fishing community, and he experienced severe stigma and discrimination as he was growing up. But this experience did not break him. Instead, it made him more determined to go beyond everyone’s expectations, so that one day he could act as an advocate for others who had experienced exclusion. He campaigns for policies and practical support that uphold the rights of persons with albinism, and have achieved some major successes. Mr Ogik was recognised among the Champions of the Albinism Cause by United Nations Human Rights, Office of The High Commissioner, and featured in a Guardian article on ten top global disability activists.
